Another thread from my youth's tapestry gone.

Whether you liked them or not, in the early 70s, they were always fucking there.

RIP.

Remember seeing the programme where they confronted manager Tom Paton who ripped them off
In the 1970s The Bay City Rollers, five teenagers from Scotland, became the biggest band in the world. They sold over 120 million records, and topped the charts in every record-selling country in the world, generating an industry worth over £5 billion in today's money. Yet by 1979, the band were penniless, victims of one of the greatest rock'n'roll rip-offs of all time

More to the point made tartan all the rage

Even on the South Bank, I kid you not, tartan scarves along with WH versions when scarves were worn on the wrist

Bye bye baby and Shang a lang were great POP songs.

Re: Les McKeown has ceased Rolling
I had a tartan scarf to show my support for the BCR even though I probably knew none of their songs apart from Bye Bye Baby (does anyone?)

I would tie it round my waist or wrist as was the observed protocol. Unfortunately it was made of the 'wrong' fabric and it had tassels on the ends. I was reliably informed by Maxine Bruce (quite a few years older than me; lived round the corner) that my scarf wasn't a REAL Bay City Rollers scarf. It was a cruel blow.

Didn’t the drummer get done for possessing child pornography?

His names Derek, so odds on he did.

Re: Les McKeown has ceased Rolling
I was only 8 years old!

Having said that, I wish I had enormous confidence and maturity as a child, so I could have said (many times) "Shut up, Maxine, what the fuck do YOU know? Your haircut makes you look like a buffalo and you always smell of TCP"

She was the monobrowed baby to my Maggie Simpson. I disliked her almost as much as the boy who killed my slow worm by putting its head in the barrel of a cap gun and pulling the trigger.

Re: Les McKeown has ceased Rolling
The drummer was a pervert & the manager was a paedo
Who urged the lads that one of them should let a Radio 1 DJ knob them so that he would promote them

Oh and Les was secretly BISEXUAL. And a drunk
I suspect that all developed after he saw Nurse and her INCORRECT scarf
Was difficult for him to carry on after that

Excellent work, you have made me laugh
I can tell that memories of the slow worm's demise are still vivid

Oh and btw, your incorrect scarf is staying with you as a WHO sartorial fail

Re: Les McKeown has ceased Rolling
Nurse, I was about same age, 7 or 8 and remember trying to get my Mum to cut up a tartan dressing gown and then sew tartan squares onto my jeans. Thankfully she always refused.

A couple of years later I was also determined to save up enough money (mainly by turning settees up and down to find coins) to buy a black leather jacket from BHS...the plan then was to paint 'The Fonz' on the back in white paint.

The nadir to it all was reached a few years after that when I became a fully signed up member of Toyah's fan club.
